Best Cities for Entry-Level Job Hunt

October 7th, 2009 · No Comments

After my post last week about long-distance job hunting, I heard from several readers seeking suggestions on where to focus their searches.  My obvious recommendation: large cities.  Although some excellent opportunities exist elsewhere, it’s harder to move up or around in smaller markets. does a good job of consolidating a number of “top cities” lists in the U.S.  It consolidates job listings in those cities by profession category. is the source of the following list of best cities for entry-level jobs.  Click on a city for job listings, which also can be sorted by profession (PR jobs are included under Marketing).

Best cities for entry-level jobs:

  1. New York, NY
  2. Los Angeles, CA
  3. Washington, DC
  4. Chicago, IL
  5. San Francisco, CA
  6. Dallas, TX
  7. Philadelphia, PA
  8. Miami, FL
  9. Houston, TX
  10. Phoenix, AZ

For the record, but without links, the 10 worst U.S. cities for employment are: Detroit; Fresno, CA; Las Vegas; Stockton, CA; Youngtown, OH; Bakersfield, CA; Warren, MI; Buffalo, NY; Providence, RI, and Toledo, OH.
