Create Your Own ‘Unternship’ and Get Hired

From the creative folks who blew up the traditional agency organizational model comes an unconventional way to recruit junior talent via a unique “unternship.”

Here’s how it works: Untern candidates propose their own unique adventures anywhere in the U.S. Unlike other internships, the untern is guaranteed a full-time, paid position at Golin upon completion of the 3-month experience. Along the way the untern will share insights in real-time with Golin and others.

But before winning the internship of a lifetime, Golin plans to narrow down the candidate pool to 25 who will participate in a series of challenges described as its own version of “The Amazing Race.” The first untern will be selected from three finalists. Application deadline is Dec. 31 and the untern will be announced on March 18, 2015.

In the month since Golin CEO Fred Cook announced the Golin Unternship at the PRSSA national conference, he said the response has been “amazing.”

For those who have heard Fred speak about his unconventional career, they will understand why this program is logical for this agency. Fred’s book, Improvise: Unconventional Career Advice from an Unlikely CEO, details his wide array of odd jobs that somehow led him to the top post at one of the world’s largest agencies.

“My own path to CEO was not typical, and the Golin Unternship is a truly unique opportunity for the next generation of talent to break free from the office cubicle, really discover what they can offer and then apply it to Golin’s culture and client work,” said Cook. “We understand the need to embrace different backgrounds and talent and believe that present-day graduates – and even those deep into their own careers – could use a push to think beyond the cubicle.”

The online application process is easy. Respond to five questions with three-sentence answers. My favorite question: “What makes you uncommon?”
